I asked a few talented visual artists and actors to be my guest here. I thought it would be interesting and inspiring to pose the same question as I did to my fellow artists last month at Art on The Lane Fine Art Gallery: What inspired you to become a professional artist? When did you know and at what moment did you decide to take the plunge.

My guest artist is Steve Simon. I met him through the owner of Haleakala Trading Company in Kihei, Maui where I had my art work for sale. Harry gave me my first opportunity to sell in Hawaii. I visited with Harry in Maui and he showed me Steve’s impressive art portfolio and book of Maui paintings. Harry is a big supporter of the arts and he knows of my ambitions. Harry said I should contact Steve. And so I did. I sent Steve an e-mail and he suggested I follow up with a phone call. We had a nice conversation. He is a warm, positive soul who is knowledgeable and also kind to offer guidance to a fellow artist. His work is diverse, beautiful and has a spiritual quality. He writes poetry to accompany his visual creations and has several You Tube videos, a couple of which are referenced below.

As a child, I loved to draw and paint. As a teenager, more “practical” aptitudes such as math and science overtook my career path. I had originally wanted to study architecture to combine the artistic with the technical but a counselor advised me to make art my hobby and focus on engineering as my career.

I accepted this seemingly sage advice and studied mechanical engineering and would work as a robotics engineer in Germany and later as a management consultant in the US and Brazil. Neither profession, however, truly stoked my true passion so I chose to return to school to redirect my career path. This time I studied business, receiving an MBA from an international program during which I studied in Paris, New York, and Tokyo with seminars throughout Eastern Europe and Asia.

I had hoped the international business studies would help me uncover some unknown passion but upon graduation, I accepted another consulting position. This one, however, was in Paris. As part of my compensation, I was furnished with an apartment in Montmartre, the storied artist quarter of Paris. In my free time I plunged into the art world that I had neglected since childhood. I visited the local galleries and studios and, of course, took in the world-class museums. I purchased art supplies and returned to painting like reacquainting with a long lost friend.

One fateful evening, I attended a performance of Mozart’s Requiem in the church of St-Germain-des-Prés. The tickets were expensive. On my limited budget, all I could afford was the least expensive of seats. The church is built in the shape of a cross. The orchestra was situated on the altar with the choir positioned at the apse above the altar. My seat was to the right of the altar, somewhat amusingly situated behind the kettledrums. Acoustically, the seat was dreadful but the vantage point incredible. From where I sat, I literally felt I was one of the musicians. As the performance proceeded, I realized I was witnessing something quite spectacular.

Most conductors seem to have a predisposition for dramatic flair and this conductor was no exception. He appeared to completely embody the full emotional weight of the Requiem and pour it out through his animated baton, just as I would imagine Monet or Renoir would serve up their impressions with their brushes. At one point the conductor appeared so drenched in sweat and physically exhausted, I thought he would be unable to continue. He stood slouched between movements, wiping his brow. Then, suddenly as if reinvigorated by the bold challenge of the next movement, he stood erect, gazed intensely with furrowed brow at the choir, and with steely determination whipped his baton into action. With angelic exuberance, the choir exploded into beautiful song.

I had never seen anyone in such fervent and passionate creative bliss as the conductor at that moment. Sure I had read about the importance of following your bliss, taking the road less traveled, and all that sort of thing. Never before, however, had I seen and felt it so dramatically animated in person. By comparison, I thought about my lack of passion for my livelihood at the time and realized I was desperately missing the boat. So it was that a conductor forced me to listen to my unrequited love of painting. I am forever grateful for his powerful impression.

The next day the spine-tingling charge from the previous evening was still stirring my creative juices. Today, I thought, I have to allow my childlike artist to replace the businessman persona. I took my easel and paints to the stairs leading up to the Basilique du Sacré Cœur. All afternoon among the tourists and local Parisians, I strived to absorb the atmosphere surrounding the basilica and recorded my impressions on canvas.

Though the painting was by no means a masterpiece, the day certainly was! In the early evening, I returned to my apartment. I opened a bottle of Côtes du Rhône and had a candid conversation with my inner child. It was then I made the decision to start a career as an artist.

My love affair with Hawaii began at the tender age of 3 this is when I first opened my eyes to the world around me on the island of Oahu where me and my family were lucky enough to live. I fell deeply in love with nature, so much so, that my mother and I would battle Monday through Friday to get me back in the house and ready for school in time to catch the bus. I spent hours in the back yard and would sometimes sneak off to roam the neighborhood by myself. I remember one day making it to a place where I could see the ocean. More than once a concerned neighbor would tell me to go home. I can honestly say today that I still have an obsession with the Hawaiian Island and this is reflected in my art.

The first famous artist I learned about was when I was 5. My dad and I watched a TV program about Vincent van Gogh. I remembered at the end of the program how they said his art was worth millions. I thought that was a happy ending. I said to my father I want to be a famous and rich artist like Vincent van Gogh. My father reminded his little girl with stars in her eyes that his paintings were not worth anything until after his death. I sat there silent for a minute and thought what a bummer. I don't want that kind of ending. I declared to my father then and there that I will be different, successful while alive! So in the back of my mind I held on to this positive notion that it could be different for an artist and a happy ending.

I continued to draw during my early years and won two art contests. My first win was at the public library’s annual art contest. I was in the 3rd grade and painted the characters from the Best Nest. I got my picture in the local newspaper and a 3rd place ribbon. My next victory was in the 6th grade. We were approaching 1976, our country's 200th birthday. My elementary school had a Bi-Centennial art contest judged by a local women's group. I think the judges favored more my subject matter. I drew my first female hero, Betsy Ross, sewing the American flag. The grand prize was a $25 check. I was very proud and this fueled my ambition.

Over the years, "real life" took over…work, marriage, divorce, single motherhood, bills and responsibilities. But that urge to create never subsided. I held on to my childhood dream. At times, it seemed far out of reach and impossible from where I stood. However, I held on to this vision to pursue a creative career. I have always loved nature and never thought that I would be spending most of my adult life indoors in a cubicle. And yet this is where I found myself. I did not want to live a mediocre life or with regrets. So I found ways to educate myself at home and after work by taking oil painting classes with a great teacher Tom Anderson. He helped propel my growth. I never missed a class. I found painting therapeutic and a great way to escape the mundane and workaholic life. It was empowering, satisfying and made me feel unique and special.

I really felt I was on my way when in 2007 I sold my first painting to a woman in Brighton

England

via the Internet. My first sale to someone that was not a friend or relative!

I had some savings and when the Internet bubble burst, so went my steady job. This was a blessing in disguise. I decided in year 2008 that I would take a big chance and heed the calling of my dreams with full focus. I ignored the nay Sayers. I persevered through the challenges of starting a business and overcoming obstacles. And today, I can honestly say that I am glad I did not give up. I created something out of nothing. Two of the best jobs perfect for me. Creative and free. I now divide my time between painting, selling my art work and teaching art to children and adults. I also have another business that allows me to work from home, my Hawaii vacation rental business. Both are growing as am I. The hardest thing in the beginning of this endeavor was to give up a steady paycheck and earn less income, but I see it as a temporary adjustment. I took a leap of faith and my vision and dreams are still in its infancy. This journey is not for the faint of heart…I am working on my first book with additional personal stories. It has been awhile since I last posted a new painting. I started this puppy painting idea with two young beginner students age 10. I took them as far as I could. When I work with young people I must be patient. Young students in particular like to produce art quickly and that is okay. In time when they master more skill they will also acquire more patience to focus on extra detail.

Some paintings I start in class with my students and with certain works, I feel a connection to and want to polish the piece and add more details. I feel compelled to go above and beyond the original inspiration or idea. I made the cute pups into Hawaiian style pets at the beach! Hawaii and tropical locations are colorful places. I am attracted to the bright playful colors and it comes out in my work frequently.

I completed this painting November 23rd 2011 it is still wet. It is a new original oil painting of two adorable Beagle puppies sitting high and dry on their owner's surf board. Some owners in Hawaii like to dress their dogs in leis, sunglasses, and even Hawaiian print clothing! I could not resist painting the characters I see on the beach. My inspirations are gathered through various images and ideas that I combine to make my original art. I also noted my symbol and message on the surfboard “Peace, Love, and Aloha.” Let’s remember to emote these good feelings wherever we are in the world. I love animals and it is fun for me to paint them. I am available to do commissions of your pets. Please just inquire.

The painting is now on sell in my Etsy store and for 1/2 off its regular price for at least the next 60 days.

As promised in my last blog I wantto introduce to you some beautiful music from Paula Fuga who is from the island of Oahu. She did try-out on American Idol and unfortunately, did not get far. You can see this audition on YouTube and listento her on my video she is awesome! JackJohnson certainly thinks so and she now tours with him. I felt it was a privilege to see her performin the small venue in Maui. Let me tell you, this woman can sing! Her music is featured here in my NEW Big Island Video Our Experience:

My time on the Big Islandpassed much too quickly. I wish we hadmore time to explore and relax. Talkabout a whirlwind vacation! I got myR&R in Maui prior to landing in Hilo. We only had 48 hours on this island for our non-stopsightseeing tour, time was limited and we had a lot of ground to cover andpeople to visit. I recommend you spendat least 5 to 14 days on each island if you can spare it.

We arrived about 9am in Hilo and immediately took in the sights and fell into the rhythmof the second largest city in the state of Hawaii and one of the wettest locationsaveraging 128 inches of rain a year. Hilo is the capital of the BigIsland (Hawaii) and is also home to the annualMerrie Monarch Festival, a week long event in honor of King David Kalākaua, who was nicknamed the"Merrie Monarch" for revitalizing the art of hula and bringing itback to the public domain. The missionarieswho arrived to the islands in the early 1800s suppressed much of the Hawaiiantraditions and culture. The hula wasdriven underground and was kept alive. David Kalākauais credited with restoring a new sense of pride in such things as Hawaiianmythology, medicine, chant, and hula when he came to power in 1874. The MerrieMonarch Festival was founded in 1964 and has exhibitions and competitions thatare considered the most prestigious of all hula contests. This event attracts the bestdancers in the world. We had lunch in Hiloand then visited a few beaches: Isaac Hale Beach Park, Kalapana, and New Kaimu Beach. We eventually checked into our beautiful rented home in Kapoho. We booked our place through Hawaii Holiday Vacation Rentals My friends started this company several yearsago and recently sold it. All the propertiesare beautiful and I like the people who work there.

I have traveled to the Big Islandseveral times before and not much has changed. I did notice that there appeared to be more homes built, but thecommunity is still a small, quiet oasis nestled in the jungles. We stayed on the East side of the island inKapoho a place known for its 90 degree temperature tide pools. These natural outdoor baths are created byinterconnected thermal tide pools that extend 200 yards into the ocean. The nearest town to shop and eat is Pahoawhich is a 15 minute drive. The downtownarea is cute and very small. You candrive from one end of the town to the next in less than 5 minutes and I’m notexaggerating! We had dinner our first eveningin Pahoa. There are a few GREATrestaurants. This I find amazing in thatthere doesn’t appear to be many choices and yet all the restaurants take pridein their food. We dined at my favoriteestablishment Luquins Mexican Restaurant and it cost each of us $12 to$13 per person this included tax and tip. The prices are reasonable on this side of the island. The food at Liquins is OMG good!

My son and I wanted to come backto the Big Islandto visit our baby coconut trees that we planted at New Kaimu Beach many years ago. I don’t know if we found our tree exactly. The beach had so many more trees thanbefore. We planted our treesapproximately 9 years ago! We alsowanted to see the volcano and lava flow, but no lava was flowing on the surfacethis trip! I thought it strange. So, one less thing for us to see and do. If you ever visit the Big Islandmake sure you take in the natural wonders of the active volcano and lavaflow. It is very cool to see the freshmolten lava river flow on land and melt into the sea. It is amazing to see new life and new landbeing created right before your eyes. This is not an every day event. A new island has already begun to form about15 miles off the southeast coast of the Big Island named Loihi, its seamounthas already risen about 2 miles above the ocean floor, and within 1 mile of theocean surface. In another thirty or forty thousand years, a new island willexist where the Big Island of Hawaii currently rests.

I was told during this recent tripnot to invest in a lava boat tour ride unless the lava is actually flowing intothe ocean. Do your homework first thiswill save you money http://volcanoes.usgs.gov/hvo/activity/kilaueastatus.php However, if you like the ocean andsight seeing from a boat you can take in the coastline and see dolphinsetc. The tours run whether or not thelava is flowing into the ocean.

The next day was our last full dayand long drive adventure to soak up what we could. Our goal was to drive to Kona and then takein the stars on top of Mauna Kea. During our journey, we did come across Punalu’ua black sand beach. There were so manyturtles! It is important you do not getclose to the turtles and please never touch them. They come ashore to rest and sleep. Thenoff to Kayak by Captain Cook’s monument for the fun of it. It is a place where dolphins are seenfrequently. However, we kayaked late inthe afternoon so no dolphins were to be seen. If you want to see the dolphins you should go out early in themorning. Many years ago, I swam out tothe dolphins. It was a wonderful memory and experience to swim with themin the wild in their natural habitat. Dolphins are curious creatures and swim close to you and they make adistinct clicking sound and squeak. Thedolphins use echolocation or biosonar. They will swim close to you where you cantouch them, but here I go again, you shouldn’t. They seem to be curious about us humans as we humans are about them. I want to add, I do not like the idea thatsome of these creatures are held captive in a pool for display. They should be free as long as they are not recovering from an injury or illness. Anyway, I digress…since wewere kayaking late in the afternoon we did see a bunch of jumping fish breakingthe surface of the water. From adistance I thought they might be dolphins. But once we got close I could clearly see it was a lot of large silver fish,I told the kids to stay in the Kayak because maybe something was somethingfeeding on them and not necessarily the other way around. A week earlier there had been a sharksighting in this area.

After our kayaking adventure, wedrove further south to Kailua-Kona for our one sunset dinner. We wanted to find a place that had live musicoverlooking the ocean. There were manyplaces that fit the bill. We discoveredHuggo’s. This was my first time diningthere. It is a casual ocean frontatmosphere with live music and they even had a hula dancer. It was a great find. I was more tempted by the location and thenpleasantly surprised by the great food, drinks and entertainment!

I was the time keeper and tourguide for the group. I had to keep us ontask. After our lovely sunset dinner bythe ocean I reminded everyone we had to wrap it up so we could make it to thetop of Mauna Kea to view the stars. This was a new experience for me as well andI knew we had to get there before 10pm closing time. I really love the town of Kailua-Kona andwanted to linger but time was ticking…We left Huggo’s at about 7:20pm to driveup to Mauna Kea, the tallest mountain on Earth 13,796 feet as measured from thesea. Astronomers and scientist love the observatorieshere. We visited the Mauna Kea VisitorInformation Station located 9,300 foot above sea level. We were prepared and packed our jeans andsweatshirts because it was CHILLY on the mountain! I also purchased a kauva chocolate bar tokeep me alert while driving and it worked! The visitor station is open from 9am to 10pm daily and it is free to thepublic. They have plenty of telescopesfor the visitors to use. But we could notreally figure them out. It was best justto look into the heavens with the naked eye. We arrived to the visitor center at 9:20pm. We just made it! I would have been bummed if they closed thedoors before we got there. We were goingup the mountain in the dark and used almost ½ a tank of gas in our rented minivan. Traveling downhill we coasted and did not usean ounce of gas. The breaks got a goodwork out though.

This is one of the best places inthe world to view the cosmos where there is virtually no light pollution. I was blown away by all the stars I could seeon top of Mount Mauna Kea. The big dipper was so close that at first Icould not see it due to the competing star light. There were so many twinkling stars andplanets scattered on this black velvet canvas. Talk abouta blanket of stars! I don’t even thinkthat expression does justice to what we visually took in our one night on topof this mountain we were so close to heaven. Neverhave I seen so many stars before in my life. Oh and to see the milky way with the naked eye was incredible. The big dipper was huge you could almosttouch it!. We also saw many shootingstars during our short visit.

Mauna Kea is also known as one ofthe cleanest spots in the world, free of pollution because dust particles and pollutionstop climbing when they meet the inversion layer, an atmospheric boundary ofwarmer air at 11,145 feet above the clouds.

After the star gazing, back to ourKapoho home. I was a little bummed that wecould not enjoy the beautiful house we rented simply because we were neverthere. But we had a great, clean,beautiful and comfortable home to sleep in and the two nights we were there wewere welcomed by a chorus of crickets, geckos, frogs, and not sure what else thatwould sing in unison at about the same pitch and a gentle breeze kicked inmoving around the palm leaves. One nightwe had a steady rain that added to the soothing orchestra of nature’ssong. I loved it and if by magic waslulled into a peaceful sleep.

Part 1 of 2 –Maui and the Big Island

Back on the mainland collecting my thoughts from my recent family visit to Maui and The Big Island (Hawaii). Time to talk story and share my new YouTube movie and slide show that captures our visual experience and more! I hope you enjoy it. It is my first attempt to edit and create a little movie. To create this homemade video, I used Windows Live Movie Maker! It is a fun and easy program to use. The underwater still shots and videos were taken with a digital waterproof Olympus camera. Chelsea owns this camera and shared her digital data with me to incorporate into the Maui and Big Island movie. I used my new Google Android phone for many of the beach videos. I was very pleased with the quality. I have visited Maui for many years and have tons of digital data that also comes from other various digital cameras that include video functionality. Today I will focus my blog on our recent Maui trip. Then part 2, my next Blog, will be about the Big Island.

The first movie is about Maui and expresses the ideas of romance, beauty, family fun, and culture. I love the sound track from Lilo and Stitch and there are a few songs used to accompany the video. I love Maui and appreciate all the other Hawaiian Islands for each has its own individual character and unique energy. Since my business is primarily Maui it is a must to stop over. No one has to twist my arm. I go willingly. It is my job. This recent trip was July 2011. We spent 17 days in Maui and 2 nights on the Big Island.

What I love about Maui is you can choose to go a slower pace if desired and enjoy nature and/or enjoy the many activities, shows and great restaurants. Maui and Oahu are the two islands that offer the most “to do” in terms of dining/activities/entertainment. The other Hawaiian Islands, in general, are slower paced like Kauai and The Big Island. And even more so in Molokai and Lanai. I only mention the most popular visited islands. The others you can not visit easily without special permission like the islands of Kahoolawe and Niihau. And they simply are not on the radar to visit. Even the Midway atolls a United States minor outlying island of Hawaii where The Battle of Midway, was fought over the

U.S.

mid-Pacific base on June 4^th 1942. However, in the year 2008 the Midway atolls is now an American Wildlife Refuge and they offer limited tourism with permitted tour groups.

My first stop in Maui is to my home away from home in South Kihei. I’m usually tired my first day in due to a lack of sleep the night before. There is so much to do before leaving the mainland. My first evening in I look forward to getting a good nights rest and in the morning I look forward to the song of many cooing birds. It sounds lovely when the rest of the world is still so quiet. The birds sing faithfully every morning here in Kihei. I do not need an alarm clock. The birds start their singing about 6am and in California it is 9am PST. Hawaii Standard Time (HST) never changes. It is nice to have your morning coffee or tea on the lanai and to look out over the Pacific Ocean. A great meditative way to start the day. Then off to exercise at the beach along the ocean before it gets too warm.

I sleep more solidly and soundly in Hawaii. I gather my strength here and I feel more in tune with my inner healing. I come here as do many to rest, have fun, and get my nature and ocean fix. It is my place of inspiration. When on my working vacation, I do make time to relax, but I also keep active. As I said there is so much to do and see. Favorite places to revisit and the need to seek new experiences.

My sister Patty, my nephew Sean, my friend Mary and Chelsea joined us the last 9 days of our trip. Mary and Chelsea took many pictures. I thought I was bad! I’m usually the picture taker. But I let go and got to relax knowing they were capturing the moments of our lives. Many of their photos and videos are part of the Maui and Big Island movie.

I love many places in Maui and I could write a book but this is a blog. I need to keep this short and sweet. If you rent one of our MauiVision properties, I do provide an 11 page Maui Fun Letter to all our guests. I update and tweak it annually.

I want to mention a new restaurant at the OGG Maui airport. Sammy’s Bar and Grill owned by rocker Sammy Hagar. The food was fantastic! Big portions and the prices reasonable. I was impressed with my dish the “Crispy Ono Pescado” it was their version of fresh island fish and chips so delicious! This was not your average fish and chips! My son had their “Beach Salad” with chicken. My adult son can be a picky eater and let me tell you, he loved this salad. My growing young man could not finish it. You will not leave this restaurant hungry that is for sure! I think it is also worth mentioning that the profits from this restaurant go to local children’s charities in Maui. That made the meal extra special. You should give this restaurant a try and know you are also supporting a good cause in the process.

I highly recommend a family magic show in Maui called “Kupanaha.” It’s nice to know that Maui has many family friendly shows that all ages can enjoy together. And “Kupanaha” is top on my list for audiences young and old. I have attended this show twice and find myself amazed by the magic and laughing at the comedy. One of our family members was randomly chosen to perform with the magician Jody Baran. We know the magic is real!

We attended a dinner and music show in a small intimate venue at Stella Blues in Kihei, Maui. We paid $60 per person. If you just wanted to attend the show without dinner, the cost was $30 per person. The food was very good. We saw Paula Fuga, Mike Love and Sam Ites perform. Paula and Mike both took turns singing lead and both are blessed with beautiful voices. The group put on a great show and harmonized well together. In most bar/restaurants they will allow younger people under 21 if they are accompanied by an adult however, they must be out by 10pm when the restaurant/bar stops serving dinner. Anyway, my son loves reggae and this was a treat for him. Paula Fuga is a success and she is a rising shining star. She has performed with Jack Johnson and Ziggy Marley. I love her music and I plan to include it in my Big Island video. I think you will love her too! I highly recommend you purchase her music CD or download “Paula Fuga Misery’s End.” It is excellent!

Grizzly Youth Academy Graduating Class 26 June 2011

I'm a proud mama. My son and most of his fellow cadets completed their 5 1/2 month Challenge Program at the “California National Guard Grizzly Youth Academy. It was fun, motivating, and difficult. Near the end of the program, he was ready to return home to enjoy some solitude. The graduation ceremony was beautiful. We enjoyed the speeches. After the event, there were a few hugs and goodbyes and mom taking pictures. When we were in the car ready to drive home, my son tells me that he feels funny. He was happy to return home and sad to leave. He said he felt an “emptiness.” He was actually a little homesick for the academy. It had become his home. He was leaving his new family in San Luis Obispo, CA.

When he first arrived to the academy my son did not know any of the cadets but soon discovered he knew one female cadet from his former high school. Many of the kids come into this program not knowing a soul. He became friends with the others. They learn to respect and support each other to "Dream It, Believe It, Achieve It." He will miss the Major, Sergeants, and his wonderful teachers. They taught him many life skills beyond what a normal high school could and in a focused 16 hour filled day! The kids do not have time to be bored. Two semesters (a year of school) is squeezed into this 5.5 months program.

It is not easy to get accepted into this academy, it is becoming popular due to referrals and recommendations from other parents like me. There are only so many students they can take due to limited space. It is a free school to the parents. Donations are of course GREATLY appreciated so please donate especially if your child is accepted. If your young man or woman does get in, and if they complete the program, they will graduate more mature, well rounded, smarter, caring, self aware and responsible. Young people from all walks of life attend this school. I’m glad that my son got to meet other people with different backgrounds and upbringings. This school brings together all the young people who are still trying to find their way in life. Some were seriously side tracked. But in the end they graduate as mature men and women with self-confidence. As a proud parent I highly recommend this program and school. It builds discipline and character in your son or daughter. It makes a huge difference not only in the cadet's life but also their family and the community.

Aloha All!

I have been busy teaching art classes. It is a fun job to create with others. It is rewarding to be a teacher especially when you see a student really get it and excel in their skill. Some leave the class feeling very proud of their work. It boosts ones confidence. When you create art you are tapping into another part of yourself. To get really good at anything it takes practice, practice, and more practice. Then one day you will flow and painting becomes more intuitive. For some it can take less than a year but for most it takes 3 to 10 years. It all depends on the natural talent of the individual and how often they PRACTICE!

I just finished this painting in one of the classes I teach. It is the second time I have painted it with students. But I altered this rendition originally created by artist Steve Powers called "Tropical Jewel." I call this one my second rendition because I sold the first one or earlier version I did last summer.

It is a beautiful place I wish to be so it is fun to paint it. It is a way for me and my students to escape into another reality. This place I do not know if it was inspired by a real place or not, but it is truly a Tropical Eden!

My Trip Maui, Hawaii

Aloha All !

I started this blog while waiting for my flight to depart magical Maui, Hawaii. I wanted to capture the inspiration in words why this place invokes a good feeling from within me. It is never easy to leave here. How I love the islands and just about everything related to Hawaii nei. I even like the open air halls and corridors of the airport. It is always inviting and refreshing to feel the breeze off the ocean and smell the fragrant flowers from a nearby lei vendor or walk pass a person adorned with this handmade garland of flowers draped gracefully over their shoulders and to see colorful plants and trees decorate the perimeters of the airfield. Unlike other airports in the United States, you see most of the passengers wearing tank tops, shorts, flip flops and hula shirts a plenty. I find this style of Hawaiiana high fashion to be sexy. A man has to be confident with him self to wear a floral designed dress shirt. And I can always spot a new arrival to the islands, they are anxious to get on with their vacation and their pale skin is begging for a dose of vitamin D that only the Maui Sun can administer in a soothing way. There are a few people running through the airport trying to catch their next flight in or out. However, there are some people like myself, who linger and do not really want to board the plane. Ah yes, the island has a way of casting a spell on its visiting guests.

Even earlier, while on California soil, waiting for our plane to carry us to paradise, I could sense the Hawaiian mood at the Oakland airport gate. People happily waiting to board the flight bound to Maui, Hawaii. Most everyone dressed in colorful tropical prints. The moment you board the plane the good vibes continue to grow stronger. This is a long awaited vacation for many, and for others, the return home is just over the horizon. The Aloha Spirit is onboard with us. I normally fly Hawaiian airlines. They play nice videos during the flight that reveal the visual beauty of Hawaii and Mother Nature plus they do great interviews and stories about Hawaii and her people. I feel prepped for my vacation.

The trips I take to Maui are a regular voyage for me. This April vacation was a 6 day getaway for my fiancé and myself. It was time to recharge our batteries. My place in South Kihei was booked so we stayed at another nice property that is ocean front with great ocean views, unit #851 at the Ka’anapali Shores Resort http://www.mauivision.com/kaanapali_851.htm. This condo is part of my MauiVision network. The beach in front is long and stretches south to Black Rock where many locals and some daring tourist jump and dive into the inviting waters below. Just past this landmark is the Whalers Village and famous Ka’anapali Beach continues on. I enjoy snorkeling here with the turtles and variety of colorful fish. Black Rock is a short distance to Whalers Village where there are many shops and restaurants to choose from. We always go to our favorite place, the Hula Grill on the beach. There is live music day and night. The sand is soft and a light cream color and the beach is wide and long and stretches far. The color of the ocean is a pretty clear blue. And in fact, most of the Hawaiian islands have miles and miles of soft sand beaches and inviting aqua colored water that is comfortable to swim in almost year round. There are some Hawaiian Island beaches with black, red and even green sand.

I have visited Maui so many times, but I keep discovering new places to dine, shows and activities to see and do. In fact, there is so much more to discover outside my favorite places, including new alluring beaches to hang loose at. I have included some videos of my favorite beaches in Maui and I hope to have more videos to share with you later in the year.

One of the highlights for me this trip was to find a rare shell washed up at Baldwin Beach Park in Maui, Hawaii. It appears to be a Tiger Cowrie shell. I am told they are not easily found in the shallow waters of the Hawaiian islands anymore. I was only on the beach for 15 minutes to shoot some video when I came across this natural treasure mixed with other pieces of bleached coral. It is a rare find indeed! It was in perfect condition with a little fading of color on the sides. I am told you have to dive deep for this type of shell and they do not usually wash ashore. There was no critter inside…as I had taken it out……Just kidding folks! I did actually check the shell and there was no one home. I would not feel good about taking a shell if there was a sea snail inside. These cowrie shells were once prized and used as currency in Africa and Egypt and other places long ago. It is also a sign of good luck and fertility among other things. However, at my age I will just accept the finding of this shell as a good luck charm and nothing more thank you. We love visiting Lahaina Town, in Maui. We have soooooo many favorite restaurants too numerous to list here. And in fact, Maui has many great places to dine all over the island! Next visit and blog, I will take the time to write in more detail other favorite features and places of interest of this island Maui. Kimo’s Restaurant, is another favorite place of mine that sits over the ocean in Lahaina, Maui, Hawaii. You can view great sunsets from here, listen to live music from guest performers and hear the ocean roar and smell the sea and sometimes feel the mist. When the sun begins to set the tiki torches are lit and this really adds to the ambience of this open air dining establishment. Plus we really enjoy the food here. I captured this group at Kimo’s for you to listen to in the clips below. The Hawaiian musical group is called “1810.” I love their sound, energy, and bare feet performance. This is the Hawaiian way “laid back” and “hang loose.” Please like this group and help get them more exposure on YouTube. I told them I would be posting my amateur videos of them.

We discovered a new restaurant “The Sea House” that overlooks Napili Bay. The food and service was excellent. The sunset view over the ocean memorable.

Another beach I have never taken the time to visit before is DT Fleming. It is a great beach with a lot of shade plus a very nice restaurant that you can dine at called “The Beach House.” The food was very good and the prices reasonable. And let me tell you, it is sure a nice way to end a beach day having lunch and a fun beverage beachside under the shade of some tall protective palms while the ocean beacons you to come back and take another dip.

My home is really Kihei and South Maui area. I love the beaches here! We drove to this side of the island, so I could film a couple of my favorite beaches. This is my son’s favorite as well as mine, Makena Beach aka Big Beach. I love how pretty the water is here and there are NO HOTELS or condos nearby. It is pure, pristine and natural. I love it. It is untouched by man except for the new lifeguard stations placed there a year or so ago. It is fun to watch the locals boogie board and have some good clean fun in the water. Very entertaining!

Another romantic and picturesque setting located in South Maui is Secret Beach. This is my personal favorite place to be. You often times see turtles, monarch butterflies, and on occasion people getting married. The beach is not big and it is hard to find. It is hidden. There are some big houses nearby but they are mostly obscured by foliage and rock walls. The only restaurant nearby is an outdoor cooking vendor who serves up some good fresh fish!

Painting of My Son Finished (for now)

My portrait of my son Ryan is complete. I need to step away from it for a week and I might tweak it a little (the flowers and background), but overall I am happy with the results and will call it a day. My Son's Portrait and The Grizzly Youth Academy

Aloha! Sorry for not posting on this painting weekly as I said I would. But after I started this portrait I took a road trip (over 3 hours long) to visit my son who I had not seen in 2 1/2 months! Then I had many art classes to teach. I know excuses, excuses. Plus I hit an awkward stage in my painting and did not want to post until I got beyond it. Since I last posted, I have worked on this painting approximately 4 hours in the past 2 weeks. The problem I had was getting his facial features correct. Here are some pictures of the work in progress:

This is where I left off. Maybe next week I will be able to finish this painting and then next month start the Hawaii landscape.

I wanted to give a shout out to the Grizzly Youth Academy and the National Guards http://www.ngyf.org/ for educating my son along with many other young men and women between the ages of 16 and 18 (or 19?). The kids live on campus for 5 1/2 months and complete a full school year in almost half the time. They will not take your teen if they do not want to be there. These kids have all volunteered to go and are interviewed before they are accepted. Once accepted, some do not last beyond the 2 week boot camp and some want out before the first month is even over. The first month was tough for my son and all the other cadets. They are homesick for their friends and family back home. They also go through TV, computer and technology withdrawals plus they do not get much privacy. They live in barracks together as a platoon (group). They must also be drug free.

The teens that get beyond the tough stage end up loving it! The kids want to be there to improve their discipline, focus, exercise, get fresh air, improve their grades, learn living skills, team building exercises, field trips, they do volunteer work and job shadowing. This is an engaging school for young people. Never a dull moment. The kids are kept very busy all day long. The teacher to student ratio is healthy. I will guess it is about 20 kids per teacher. The kids work together to improve as individuals and work together to have the highest scores (like GPA) in their platoon! My son's goal is to attain a 4.0 GPA. I highly recommend it.

There are more young men who sign up then young ladies. I would say 1/4 females to 3/4 males. The females live in separate quarters. The teens mature, learn respect for themselves and others while in this program. They improve in confidence. They get to choose a mentor for the program. This is an important job to be a mentor. The mentor gets to visit the cadet more than family! Plus the mentor promises to stay with your teen for an additional year after graduation to make sure they are keeping their personal goals. Be sure to pick a mentor who is truly up to the task it is important. My son has a GREAT mentor! Thank you Kelley for being faithful and positive. Kelley loves this role. His son also completed this program the previous year. This is how my son learned about the program. My son had to sell me on the idea and I was a hard sale, but now I am a convert to the school.

My son is at the half way point and loves it now. It was so good to see him physically and in 2 1/2 months his GPA is 3.60. He has really matured and learned good social skills. My son has always been a pretty good kid. However, he was falling behind in school and was bored. When we visited him for 5 hours we took him around town and he would hold doors open for people, and when we were served in restaurants, he would say thank you and have a nice day. This school really emphasizes respect and good manners. This program is free to the parents and teen however, they do need donations to keep the school running. They ask the parents to participate in a fund raiser. I will be auctioning my Maui condo during their silent auction. I am happy to contribute to this great school and to these kids. I hope that they will expand and open more schools in every state! Not all cadets go on to join the military. They will not ask or force your child to go this route. But some of the students do choose to proudly join and serve our country.

New Painting of My Son Ryan

I am working on several new paintings currently, but I have chosen this one to blog about. It has nothing to do with the South Pacific or Hawaii. It is not a place, but it is a special person in my life. It is a portrait of my son Ryan who is now 17 years old, however, I took this picture of him when he was about 3 years old. I love this picture of him.

I am currently teaching people portraits in one of my art classes and I thought I really need to do this painting of my son. This image has been pulling me for awhile.

I also miss my son who is away living at a US military camp attending a 5 month long high school program. What a great experience for him. I am proud of how focused he is and his great attitude. He is motivated to do something good with his life. As a mother we all wish for our children to grow up and contribute to society in a positive way. He does make me proud. He is a wonderful young man. Okay enough personal stories, but this is another reason I felt it is time to paint him, plus I am sharing the progress of this painting with him via snail mail. I like to kill 2 birds with one stone whenever possible.

I started with a white canvas measuring 11”x14.” It is gallery wrap canvas so I will paint the edges. With a gallery wrap canvas there is no need to purchase a frame, it is optional. By the way, I try and use canvases that are the same size as standard frames. Meaning you can buy frames already made to fit your canvas. It cost a lot less money versus having a custom frame made. I also paint a lot so it is good to be able to switch my same size paintings in and out of frames that I already own.

Step one; I paint the canvas with grey gesso. This dries quickly. I then scan in the image of my original photograph. I do not want to mark up my original photo. Plus it makes my life easier to do grid method if I crop and size a new version of this photo to better fit the 11”x14” canvas. If you divide 11” by 2 you get 5.5” and if you divide 14” by 2 you get 7”. I crop and size my scanned image to fit this dimension exactly. So the printed picture measures 5.5”x7.” I draw lines using my T-square on the canvas and make 2” squares horizontal and vertical. On my photocopy I make similar lines or squares in 1” marks. This is half the size of the canvas. The canvas and photocopy now have the same number of boxes. I number the boxes on the canvas and on the photo. I then draw my image with a number 2 pencil (lightly) to match what I see on my photocopy (do not use charcoal pencil it smears in your paint). I find this to be a very quick and accurate way to get my image on the canvas. It also helps improves ones drawing skill.

I have done portraits with straight color but I do prefer starting in gray tones. I find it easier to correct my drawing as I go along and it helps me see the values of light, medium and dark. This is a good exercise to strengthen ones artistic eye to see values. I also think it is cool to see your painting come alive like a black and white photograph. Flesh tones are a little more challenging so starting in black and white lays down a foundation to place the color on top of later.

I see some errors in my initial drawing and my gray scale painting. I fix the angle of his ear and the front of his face needs adjusting. I shrink the chin and lips. I do this with more gray/white paint but I also shrink the features of the face with yellow paint that I am thinking will be my sky color, however, I will probably tone it down or make it another color entirely.

I often times use my paint brush or ruler as a sighting tool to compare angles from my photograph to the painting itself. You can catch mistakes this way.

In all I took about 2.5 hours.

I recently stayed in beautiful Kauai, Hawaii January 2011. My fiancé and I stayed 4 days in Princeville and 4 days in Kekaha. How I love this island! We missed a big storm that hit Kauai earlier. The run off from the mountains causes the red soil to mix with the ocean and makes it murky. Only on some of the beaches and it is temporary. The waves were also slamming the first two days of our trip. We saw whales beyond the mist and crash of waves in the distance. The temperature averaged 78 degrees most of the time with a quick sprinkle here and there but it remained mostly dry. Paradise! When the ocean calmed down we were able to see so many whales with the naked eye! They were having fun. My last day I spent walking on Kekaha Beach and I saw a whale breach (jump out of the water) 18 times. I couldn't believe it. Just like the whale I painted in my recent painting (pictured below last image).

The people in Kauai are very nice. Everyone takes the time to talk story with you. And I love to ask some of the transplants where did you come from originally and why did you move here (like duh). I love their stories. At least three different people told me they were on vacation here and decided never to return to the mainland. They left everything behind and didn’t get back on the plane. I admit I’m not that ballsy! These people did admit to not having kids at the time to care for. So that made the choice easier. I have felt that same calling sensation or ache in my heart to stay. And some day I will go there and stay however, with a little bit of a plan and a mixture of trust in the Aloha Spirit to guide me.

I met a talented artist in historic Koloa town named Christian Riso he owns an art gallery and frame shop. I enjoyed his story about the roosters. He paints many things including this bird. They are all over the island looking plump, healthy and colorful. I think they are too beautiful to eat. They are free spirits and are not afraid to fly up and try to take a sandwich out of your hand if they can! This artist said that he will build a shrine in their honor because they have been his money making bird. That was funny! But people like to buy the rooster prints and paintings because it reminds them of Kauai.

Little R & R Hawaiian Style Painting

Now back to my big painting “Little R&R Hawaiian Style.” Oh I feel like I a fibber for posting I was done with this particular painting. I should know better! This was a live blog challenge for me. Whenever I do a painting, and any artist for that matter, it is important to let the painting sit for a week or more before you call it done. I did feel like this painting was complete for the blog challenge, but every day I looked at the painting and felt there was something missing. I was too busy to return to the painting until just now. The painting felt flat. It lacked intensity in color and contrast. When the bright colors dry they sometimes get flat or darker. I felt her flesh highlights needed more warmth. The skirt and head lei needed more intensity as well. I wanted a bright cheery painting with a lot of complimentary colors. I brightened the red on her waist band and top. The contrast of light and dark are important to get that pop and three dimensional feel. I darkened the wet sand to make the water stand out and to not compete with the color of the skirt. I could add something in the sand next to her. But I don't feel like it. So it is done. Besides this painting can be cropped later for prints etc.

I thought I was done with this painting. It was a blog challenge to do this live and quick. I let this painting sit for over two weeks and went back to it I knew that I needed more detail work. This is often the case with painting. I have signed this image but to the left of her I am thinking I might place a flower lei.

I did spend another 30 minutes putting in wet sand and adding highlights to her skin, hair, head lei, and brightening up the hula skirt. I worked on the whales spouting adding more highlight to the mist. This picture was taken indoors under bright lights and no flash.

Day 12 and 13 – Finished! I worked on this painting two different days a total of 4 hours or close to that. When you first start a painting it feels easy, but when you get down to the final stages of editing and detailing the process of painting slows down. I feel good about this painting and so I will stop fussing over it. I want to keep it simple and whimsical. I want to bring the viewer to a place and time of relaxation and feeling good. Imagine sitting on soft warm sand in Hawaii during winter. Here is a beautiful place where it is still mild and warm with many sunny tropical days to linger. It is also a treat to see the whales vacationing and playing off the Pacific coast so close to the beach that there is no need for binoculars to view them.

The painting is still wet in some spots. In California it has been raining a lot but this morning no rain, so I took it outdoors to photograph without the flash and the glare is not noticeable on the wet parts of the painting. I will have it professionally photographed and color corrected to match the actual painting closer. The mid section of the water should be greener the photo I took does not reflect it well.

I spent 20 to 21 hours on this painting from day 1 to 13.

The painting is large 48”x48” you feel as if you could walk into the canvas. There is no need for a frame as the edge is 1.5” thick and I will paint the edge one solid color like blue or…Not sure yet. I will wire the back of the canvas so it is ready to hang. After the holidays, I will display and mark this painting for sale at Art on the Lane - 178 East Prospect Avenue - Danville, CA. The cost of this painting is $2,400 US dollars.

Day 11 – I feel like I’m almost done. I still need to work on the flower head lei, the hair and the whales (I just started the outlines of their bodies). If you look in the distant waters you can see the whales spouting. I will have 3 whales in all. I’ve always wanted a painting with more sea critters and I do like whales and dolphins. It is whale watching season along the California coast and as far south as Mexico and Hawaii. And after spending time in Laguna Beach this past November I feel inspired to paint the whales.

Today I spent over 2 hours working on the girls face, hands, flower head lei, skirt, hair and the beginning of the whales. I also darkened the distant ocean and created more motion in the water. I fussed over details today.

At this point I need to take a step back from the painting and get some holiday things done. It is also good to wait a few days so I can come back to the painting with fresh new eyes. I need to evaluate it and complete the last details.

I will not be posting for a short spell while, but I will return and I should have this whimsical painting done before the holidays!

Day 8, 9 and Day 10 Painting - Time for R and R

Aloha! I just merged the three days together because I wanted to show more progress.

Day 8 - I worked the water, the hula skirt and top. I also glazed the skin with a mixture of burnt umber and burnt sienna. I work about 1.5 hours.

Day 9 - I work on the flesh tone bringing out more lights and dark with a mixture of white, burnt sierra, alizarin crimson and yellow ochre. For the dark shadows I add to the mentioned mixture burnt umber and a touch of whatever blue and green is on my palette. After I place the lights and darks on the body I lightly blend the edges together gently and this creates my middle values and further defines the shapes. I spent about 2 hours

Day 10 - After the skin is dry I glaze one thin layer of burnt sienna all over the body to bring the skin color in balance. I work on the flower head lei and add the long hair. I still have more work to do on the hair and lei. I also added the shadow under the hula skirt I will soften the shadow later plus work on the hands and face. I worked another hour today.

It is hard to get a good picture when the canvas is wet. And I am using a flash so it creates a glare on the canvas. I normally would take the canvas outdoors to photograph to prevent the glare and avoid the flash. However, the canvas is large 48”x48” so I leave it indoors to photograph. When this painting is done and dry, I will have it professionally photographed and that will be the last photo I upload.

I am thinking I should have this young woman looking at something in the distance. I could add to this painting a familiar landmark a distant island perhaps and maybe some whales. I spent time in Laguna Beach during the Thanksgiving holidays recently. My fiancé and our grown kids stayed at the Hotel Laguna. It is next door to Wyland’s Art Gallery and home. How lucky he is to live right on the beach! Wyland is also an artist I have long admired since high school. While I was sitting on the beach I noticed whales swimming in the distant waters and it seems they were swimming right in front of Wyland’s gallery (two different days). Some of you may have heard of Wyland, he has made a name for himself in the art world by painting the “Whaling Walls.” He has a goal to complete 100 murals by year 2011. I’m not clear if he has met his goal or how close he is to meeting this number. Year 1995 he had completed 50 murals worldwide.

I visited the gallery and purchased his book “Whale Tales - Tales from America’s Leading Marine Life Artist” copyright date is 1995. This book was an excellent read. I feel like I now know the man behind the art. It is an easy read, interesting, adventurous, and explains the struggles and politics to get his 50 Whaling Walls painted. He also writes his story with humor. Wyland collaborated with freelance writer Mark Doyle in the writing of this book: Whale Tales: Tales from America's Leading Marine Life Artist

I learned that this artist has a lot of energy to accomplish his dreams! He started his art at a young age and stayed focused. He was raised by a single mother in Detroit Michigan. He was a struggling young artist and came from humble beginnings. I love the start of the book when he describes his first blue collar jobs which he failed at miserably. I felt sorry for him and yet also found the stories funny.

When I was in high school, I first heard about this artist Wyland, and I had a small crush on him because he is handsome and talented etc. then when I got older I would sometimes wonder if Wyland was gay or straight. This is only because I never saw him pictured with a woman and I never head about him being in a relationship with anyone actually. After reading this book I discovered he is straight. He is just too busy to have any long steady relationship. This man is a hardworking, ambitious artist on a mission to bring attention to the world the need to save the whales, ocean and other sea life. I agree. We need to preserve the beauty of this planet and protect our precious forests and wilderness. We are all connected.

I also purchased his video “Wyland Artist of the Sea – hosted by Lloyd Bridges” I could not find it for sale on Amazon. However, I’m sure any of his DVDs are good and educational. I highly recommend the two items I purchased in the art gallery. They are both excellent!

Progress end of day 7

Day 7 – Today I worked mostly on the water. In particular, I continue building the shallow water and foam patterns. I also added lighter sand color and started the skin tone (I am not done). Worked on her top and I think I will make it red.

My fiancé said I should let her hair down and make her topless like my other ladies. I am considering getting rid of the Wilma Flintstone hairdo and let the hair flow in front of the body and to her side. I don’t want the hair to cover her back. I will wait for the water to dry before I change her hair style.

I still need to work on the flesh this will take some time and I’ll save it for the weekend.

I worked about 2 hours today.

Day 6 Painting - Time for R and R (working on foam patterns)

Day 6 - I had class last night with six adults. We were wrapping up a painting so they could take it home before the holidays. I worked overtime to get it done. Teaching is one of the best jobs. People come to class because they want to be there. And as a teacher, it is rewarding to see their development. The art studio is a place my students feel they can have fun and relax after a stressful day of work. Creating art is good therapy!

After class I return home. It is late. I think to myself, I don’t have time to work on my big painting today. But I need to make the time. I turn on the news to catch up on events. I only have time to work on the lower half of the water. I focus on the foam patterns. I still need to work this area further to develop it better. However, I love the results thus far. I will continue working on the water another day.

I love water. It has always been my desire to learn to paint the ocean in it’s many forms. I particularly love the transparent clean waters of the South Pacific and Hawaii region. I’m drawn to paint calm waters. It took many, many years of trial and error and tons of practice to finally capture the ocean on canvas. And to be honest, I’m still learning, albeit at a much more rapid rate. It didn’t start out this way in my early development as an artist; there was a time when I felt like a slow learner. And honestly, I was too busy to practice let a lone breath. But that has changed (another story) and now I am pursuing my passion with gusto!

Today I painted for about an hour. I’ll get busy this weekend!

Day 5 Painting - Time for R and R

Day 5 - I continue to work on shaping the girl by bringing out more contrasting light and dark values. I will be adding flesh tone to her soon after the gray paint dries. I will have to wait a few days. As I continue to work on her I fin

d myself shrinking the arm and reshaping the face. I added another layer of color to the hula skirt and more design to it. I begin coloring in the flower head lei and lavender top and belt. I like to start with darker hues first and slowly bring out more light as I continue.

I darkened my water at the top of the canvas and brought this color down about the top quarter of my ocean. This is the second day on the ocean. I spent most of the time on the girl today.

I had a lot of fun tonight painting and singing. I listened to some good music while painting the Beach Boys and Beatles. I highly recommend playing music while you paint, doubles the enjoyment. I spent 2 hours creating.

Day 2 - My first day of painting (the sky) is still wet. I like that, it makes painting the clouds easier for me. As I paint the clouds in with white and a touch of burnt sienna I melt the edges into the surrounding blue sky. This also tints the white down further. The edges of my clouds become soft and wispy when the colors blend. This is the beauty of oil. I let some of the orange canvas show through the clouds so there is a warm color and glow. Today I spent about 45 minutues.

Day 3 - I paint in the foundation of my sand with a mixture of white, burnt sienna, alizarin crimson, and yellow ochre. I use more white than the other colors mentioned until I get the sand color I desire (I will lighten the sand even more so later). The ocean is a mixture of phthalo blue, phthalo green and manganese blue and some alizarin crimson. I make the upper part of the ocean very dark and as I progress down the canvas I go lighter blue / green towards the sand. I melt the sand with the water. I start adding white caps in the distant water and shape water patterns in the shallow water with light purple shadows and I use more sand color to force the sand to show through the water around my shadows. I remove the tape and paint this part of the ocean the darkest. I take my time here to keep the horizon line straight. This takes a steady hand. I painted another 2 hours. The bigger the canvas the longer it takes to paint there is much more to cover.

Day 4 - I now start painting in the girl with Ivory black and white. I create different shades of gray. The paint is still wet so I can melt the colors of my original line drawing with the new paint. I am sculpting the figure to look more three dimensional with values of light, medium, and dark. I am focusing on blending the hard lines and colors together. As I am painting the figure I am redrawing the girl. The original drawing was a bit off. I add the first layer of paint to the hula skirt (I always start darker than what I see in the photo).

In case you are wondering I don’t always prime my canvas a color I sometimes paint my picture on a white canvas directly. And when I paint people or animals I don’t always start them out in gray. I sometimes go straight in with color.

I stop for the evening. I paint almost 2 hours.

Rainy Day Painting Day 1

Day 1 – Dec 1st, 2010

It is the biggest canvas I have ever worked on. It is a wrap around canvas and has a 1.5" thick border. I'll paint the edges last. This canvas measures 48"x48.” It is a big square. First I have to decide what to paint, this part takes some time. There is so much I want to create! I go through my collection of pictures and clippings of inspiration to form my visual idea. I begin by coloring the white canvas a warm orange. I could have used oil paint for my base, but I used acrylic paint it covers and dries faster than oil. The rest of this painting will be done in oil paint my favorite medium. After 15 minutes, the acrylic paint dries. I do a light pencil sketch or outline of the girl on the beach. I place a piece of tape on my horizon line to separate the sky from the water. This helps keep the line as straight as possible.
Now I paint in the sky and with oil paint. I stop for the day. I have spent about an hour to get started.

Rainy cold day, I say it is time to start a new painting of a warm faraway place

Aloha from Northern California! It has been a cold November and December thus far. I don't mind the change of seasons and I do love stormy weather, especially if I'm cozy indoors. Due to the economy I have been painting smaller pictures 8"x10", 11"x14", and 16"x20." However, at least once a year, I do feel compelled to create one large scale painting. When it is winter time here, I like to escape somewhere tropical and warm. Painting keeps me out of trouble and fills the time nicely. I’m not the kind of girl to bake cookies on a rainy day, I much rather be painting. Like I said, it keeps me out of trouble and helps maintain the weight! If you are trying to break any bad habit, I recommend you keep your hands and mind busy with a hobby such as painting.

Painting is a journey, and as you develop your skill, it does become more and more enjoyable. It is a nice challenge to paint a picture. Never boring, always interesting! I work with many beginner students and most feel a little intimidated to start their first, second, third painting etc. However, you need to push yourself beyond the fear and doubt. Never compare yourself to another artist. Measure your personal growth by comparing yourself to your own past work. See the improvement. Remember we all need to start somewhere. Most people are not born at the top; they had to earn their way there. You didn’t come out of the womb walking so remember to be patient with yourself. You will get there one step at a time, one brush stroke at a time, and one painting at a time.

Aloha my friends!

I was going to write about my recent hula show and reveal pictures of my almost complete paintings from this event. However, I was reading back through my blog and something in the past history did change that I should clarify now. Art on The Lane next to the Wild Vine - Wine and Bistro did not work out. The landlord was very challenging and unfair (I’m being delicate here and holding back on words) so both parties in the painful end decided to part ways. There is a crazy story behind that fall through, but I better not say more in this public forum.

The negotiating of our old space took several months of back and forth dealings and many artists’ hopes besides mine were raised and then crushed unfortunately. It is strange and yet funny in a sick way how one person can have so much control over many people’s lives in that brief moment of time and space. This also put my book project on hold further.

However, as I was walking away and feeling so done from having any art gallery, Barbara Davies and Joanne Robinson my original gallery partners decided to take the new space that I had found earlier but I had let got of due to all the confusion with our old land lord (she wanted us back at one point). This new space is very beautiful compared to our old space. And again it is just back to us three artists. Simple this way, no managing on my part. Our new home is in a beautiful renovated building that is reminiscent of other historical homes built in this area in the late 1800s. Down town Danville is very charming this way. A place that feels rich in beauty surrounded by rolling hills populated with wild oak trees and other native greenery and brush. I realize how luck I am to live here today. Sometimes I forget when I’m busy running around from one appointment to the next. However, when I slow down I soak it all in.

We have been at our new home since June 2010. I love our new gallery it feels and looks bright, vibrant, classy, and cheerful, our former location was old and run down and our new address is a short walk from the previous space.

There is a Chocolate store just across the street with the best treats. I’m developing a sweet tooth for gourmet delicacies! And on the other side of our art gallery is Father Nature’s Restaurant. I love the food there as well and the historic atmosphere and the decor.

It is November 2010 and I did finally finish my first draft of my book! It is now in the hands of my editor friend for evaluation. I hope to have this book complete and ready for print and sale by March or April 2011. I have more paintings to do for this book.

Now that I am a creative artist full-time, the genie has been let out of the bottle and I have this insatiable need to create and bring forth new ideas that had been buried and untapped. I have a goal to write and illustrate a few more books including a series of children books as well as instructional how to art books.

Maui Beach Bum

This is a dog named “Nani” that befriended me and my boyfriend on the beach in Oahu's North Shore.

Nani means beautiful in Hawaiian. She found a coconut that had washed ashore and she was trying to tear in to it. Obviously her owners had shared the fruit with her before. My boyfriend with some effort finally was able to help her break this coconut open. Unfortunately inside there was no coconut milk it had all evaporated. Hawaii beach dogs are friendly. What a life they have!

I painted Nani in Wailea, Maui this is the background although as I said earlier we found her lounging on the beach in Oahu.

If anyone knows the breed of this dog I am curious please share with me if you know.

There is no Other Place I’d Rather be But All Washed Up on The Shores of Kauai

I love all the Hawaiian islands for different reasons, but Kauai is my favorite. I think for me it is because I long for solitude and this island is the least busiest and therefore more quiet. This island is the oldest in the Hawaiian chain and it has transformed into a place of complete lush greenery and jagged rock formations that can only be created with millions of years of rain and erosion shaping and chiseling this unique terrain.

I call this new painting that I completed 9/16/10 "All Washed Up on Kauai's Shores" well because there is no other place I'd rather be all washed up and renewed!

It has been awhile since I last blogged and I will try to do better going forward. There is so much to write about, and so little time it seems. To be more faithful to the blog process I plan to post all my NEW paintings here and write about the inspiration, process, and big or small details.

For the past two years, I continue to teach art and for eight years work my MauiVision vacation rental business. I feel blessed that I can do both self created jobs. I have always said if there is a will (dream) there is a way. It is wonderful to work from home and in an art gallery painting with flexible hours. I have been building up to this day. I am 3/4 way complete with my first book draft. I need to stay focused and get this project done. I have been working on it for several years just gathering material. The hard part is to organize my thoughts and force myself to do a lot of cutting to make this book strong and interesting. They say if your book bores you it will surely bore others. I keep this in mind as I continue to create and edit it. I really hope to have this project done 2010 but with anything big I have attempted my projections are usually off from my ambitious time line. But nonetheless I will get it done!

I have been painting a lot and participating in art shows and events trying to get exposure as a new artist. I have been marketing myself for a few years now and still trying to figure out what the best strategy is to get noticed. People recommend getting a FaceBook business page hmmmm something else to keep track of. I don't know I'm not totally convinced it is something I should do. As a creative person with goals I have to watch how time is spent and not spread myself too thin.

Aloha!

It has been awhile since I have written anything here on this new blog site of mine. I had good intentions on posting thoughts and ideas on a faithful and consistent basis, but life and opportunities keep rolling in like high tide and I can barely keep my head above water. It is a blessing to have this many opportunities. Life is never boring as I nurture and wait patiently for the young seedlings of opportunity to grow into a healthy money tree. If anyone can survive these challenging economic times then one will only prosper. And so, this is my mantra “faith and perseverance.”

I have 24 hours a day that I keep very full and all the while try to maintain a healthy family life and run my businesses and stay responsible. What little time I seem to have as of late, I try to convey ideas on canvas and there are many visions I have yet to express in this visual format. It is a wonderful feeling to get lost in the world of creativity and even better when a painting is complete that I feel proud of. This creates a sense of accomplishment and pride.

I have been painting a lot with my students and we learn and grow together. The old saying is true, a teacher can learn from their student. It is a two way street. I love teaching art it is a very rewarding career. I’m glad I was encouraged to take this path almost 2 years ago when my art teacher retired and moved to Texas and gave me his student base. Since then, I have grown it with referrals and some advertisement efforts. But referrals are the biggest contributor to the growth of my art business.

More than 5 years ago, I have been working on several book ideas. However, being scattered and busy it has been hard to stay focused. But nonetheless, over the years, I would add to the database of thoughts knowing one day I would sit down and organize all of the information I have been gathering.

Recently, February 2010 I decided to faithfully work on one of my book ideas with focus and attention. As of this blog posting I am over half way through the revising, cutting, organizing, researching phase and I continue to add new material. I set my first draft deadline for March 1st. I did not make it. I set a new deadline for April 1st, I will not make it. I admit it is just a bit frustrating. However, it is only because another opportunity came up for me early March. I had to do something. I had to make a decision and thus another delay. The opportunity is the gallery/studio space Art on the Lane. I currently share the space with two other talented artists, but for financial reasons, the other two artists wanted to walk and go to a co-op where rent was much less to teach their classes. Part of me was tempted to follow, but in the end, I decided instead I would keep the gallery open myself and produce a new more flourishing art co-op. I have experienced a few and I want to do it better by creating an environment that is positive and a win/win in terms of fairness and profitability for all involved. There are still a few more spots to fill.

I and my two fellow artists have been waiting for over a year now for the empty space next door to our gallery to be leased to a restaurant. Approximately 8 months ago it was secured by The Wild Vine Bistro. They were supposed to open up for business back in October but the town of Danville held them up due to permits, inspections and the waiting time is long unfortunately. They are now scheduled to open April 10th 2010. I feel this restaurant will bring life and exposure to our gallery. This is the reason I did not want to leave. So now, I am now the proud owner and manager of The Art on the Lane beginning May 1st. And until then I am busy preparing for the new opening day. I will share the space with many more artists to make it work financially and to help keep the gallery open longer hours to coincide with our new neighbor. I look forward to supporting my fellow artists while being able to also thrive and continue my art school in its same location.

I feel everyone has a book in them that they could write, because isn’t life just interesting! I know as I progress each day in my own life, a new page is being written each morning I awake.
I have a new draft deadline for my first book June 1st 2010. Until then I will keep my nose to the creative grindstone!

Great Movie - Local Color

If you have a dream, and especially if you are an artist of any skill level or attracted to the beauty and wonders of art as an appreciator, then you will love this gem of a movie. I found it at Block Buster by happenstance while searching the aisles for a new movie. I have never heard of this independent film but it won many, many awards. I can see why! And hey, it is about two oil painters, one a teacher and mentor and the other a student. That sold me. Since I am a dreamer, artist, and teacher, this movie struck a chord with me on a very personal level. I had to learn more

This movie is based on writer/director George Gallo’s real life story when he himself was a young artist. Actor Trevor Morgan portrays his character.

Nicholi Seroff is a Russian representational artist, played by actor Armin Mueller-Stahl and his “want to be student” Johnny Talia is played by actor Trevor Morgan. Johnny is a young passionate artist who discovers, through his local frame shop, that this Russian master lives nearby. Johnny wants to learn from this man who he has always admired. He keeps trying to get Seroff to talk art with him but with no success. Until finally one day Seroff decides to take on this eager student.

Seroff is a gruff character on the outside who has become disenchanted with the art world. However, on the inside, this character reveals the beauty of what it is to be an artist and while he shares his life lessons with young artist John Talia he also teaches the viewer on a subtle level how to see the splendor of our world with eyes wide open.

George Gallo writes beautifully, poetically and the lines and images in this movie are sure to inspire. As an artist and teacher myself, I found this movie surprising educational.

I highly recommend this movie it is one of the best I have seen this year. I wonder if it even made it to the big screen. Sometimes the best movies do not get the recognition in this arena, but are recognized by the public after the fact and by word of mouth. These are the best treasures! This movie encompasses what I feel is hard to put into words on what it is to be human, creative, and alive. There is also a sprinkle of good humor throughout the film. The story is beautiful from start to finish.

The actors in this movie are well known. They basically worked for nothing to make this film a reality: Armin Mueller-Stahl, Trevor Morgan, Ray Liotta, Samantha Mathis, Ron Pearlman, Diana Scarwid, and Charles Durning.

This movie has real substance that will fill your soul with good heartfelt nourishment. This movie doesn’t fill the viewer’s time with an empty plot like so many violent movies out there today that leave you empty and anemic emotionally. So rent this movie and enjoy or better yet buy it for your personal movie collection. It is a keeper!

Introduction to the Little Hawaiian Artist - Once Upon a Time....

Aloha and Hello!

I am Kathy McCartney, a tropical artist who use to live in Oahu, Hawaii. I believe I was almost 3 years old when me and my family arrived to this tropical oasis.

When you are young and your eyes are first open to the world you naturally want take in the beauty that surrounds you. I was fascinated with lights, colors, gadgets, music, voices, smells, sweet foods etc. I was blessed to first come awake into this earthly plane where heaven and earth exist this Hawaii nei (beloved Hawaii).

I have always loved things that are beautiful, and I think this true for everyone. It is a way to find peace and comfort for one's soul and we must feed our soul things that are good to keep it healthy. What you put in is what comes out. What comes out is what we share with the rest of the world. If we want world peace, we must begin with ourselves.

As humans we are attracted to the arts, be it visual, music, fine food, beautiful settings, entertainment etc. A mood and feeling is evoked in each of us when we are exposed to certain people, places, things, and any artistic creation.

I am an artist today who paints with oil on canvas tropical moods and feelings that I call McCartney Tropical Expressions. I paint because it makes me feel good to create something from seemingly nothing. To paint a picture and create effects on canvas is like being a magician. This wonderment with art has never ceased for me. Other artist have inspired me with their magic and I hope to do the same for others. This is one of the reasons I enjoy teaching art. I love to see my students be in ah when they have successful moments during their creative process. Making their painting come to life.

I am working on a educational book and DVD as well as a book sharing my personal artistic journey. I hope what I create and share will inspire, give hope, and a belief in yourself that you too can make your dreams come true.

I started a new page on my art website. It is my gallery in progress. Here you can see me form new paintings. Each day I paint be it 30 minutues or an hour or two I will take a picture and post it.
